A Brief History of Quilting (author unknown)
Over the centuries quilting has evolved from purely functional to an item of art. Originally quilting (the technique of fastening two pieces of material together with some stuffing in between) was used in clothing both as an insulator against the cold and also as an extra barrier to be worn under plated armor. In medieval Europe quilting was used to display fine needlework as two plain sheets were sewn together. Not until colonial America when fabric was scarce did patchwork quilting begin its emergence. As the economy stabilized women were able to buy fabric specifically for quilting. Quilting became a social and creative outlet for many women and quilting bees drew families and communities together. During this period in time a young girl would learn basic sewing and quilting starting at the age of five. Simple patterns were used to teach technique and quality of stitch. As she grew so would her skill and she would be making items to put in a hope chest. These items would be the bedding and other household items to be taken with her when she married and set up housekeeping. As America expanded westward the pioneers took their quilts with them. Quilts not only protected against harsh winters, but precious objects were wrapped within them to protect them from breakage on the road west. Again quilting bees provided a place to socialize in an area where neighbors were scarce. As the world modernized fewer and fewer girls chose to pursue or perfect this craft. Ironically it was during the Women’s Liberation movement that quilting came back into style, not as a utilitarian object, but as a form of art. Quilting is now being learned by a new generation of women, and with such a wide array of fabrics and accessories, the possibilities are endless.
