1.    Editor's Introduction (Part 1 of 3)

June 8, 2005: In keeping with the spirit of this season of bicentennial celebration of Joseph’s birth, beginning today, (and with the permission and blessings of Deseret Book Company), we will publish the entire history in serial form on Meridian. This history has not been serially published in over a hundred years. We wish that every member of the Church could and would read this history. It is inspiring, powerful, heart-rending and unique. Where else in history do we have a major world leader’s biography written by his mother? It’s rare indeed and it’s a first-rate history.

Editors’ Introduction (Part 1 of 3): It was the bleak midwinter of 1844–45, only months since her sons Joseph and Hyrum had been murdered by a gloating mob at Carthage Jail, when Lucy Mack Smith sat down to tell her life story to a twenty-three-year-old scribe named Martha Jane Knowlton Coray ...

2.   Editor's Introduction (Part 2 of 3)

June 9, 2005: The Editor's Introduction continues today with a discussion of the controversy over the 1853 edition of Lucy Mack Smith’s history of Joseph Smith, which was called Biographical Sketches of Joseph Smith, the Prophet, and His Progenitors for Many Generations.

Editors’ Introduction (Part 2 of 3): For eight years after its completion in 1845, the manuscript remained unpublished, pushed aside by other priorities. In 1852 Apostle Orson Pratt, on his way to a mission in England ... purchased it [the manuscript] for a certain sum of money, took it to Liverpool with him, where, without revision and without the consent or knowledge of President Young or any of the Twelve, it was published under his direction in 1853. Questions about Lucy Mack Smith's book had been simmering in the minds of the Brethren for several years before 1865, when Brigham Young decided to recall it. When Lucy sat down with Martha Jane [Coray] in 1844, she certainly had no idea of the controversy that would sizzle around the simple recounting of her life’s story ...

3.    Editor's Introduction (Part 3 of 3)

June 10, 2005: This is the third and final installment of the Introduction to The Revised and Enhanced History of Joseph Smith by His Mother.

Editors' Introduction (Part 3 of 3): The Editors, Scot Facer Proctor and Maurine Jensen Proctor, explain why this revised and enhanced edition was necessary and point out its features.

Chapter 2 - The Tragic Story of Jason Mack - Lucy (Mack) Smith's Oldest Brother

June 30, 2005: Before he [Jason] attained his sixteenth year, he became what is termed a seeker, a believer in the power of God manifest through the medium of prayer and faith ... At the age of twenty he became a minister of the gospel. Shortly after this, he became enamored with a beautiful and wealthy young woman by the name of Esther Bruce ...

"Stop fighting your creative spirit that is struggling to break free inside you. You will not be the person you were meant to be until you free this creative spirit and find ways to put it to use. Freeing your creative spirit will not send you into financial ruin or cause havoc with your life, if you acknowledge the creative side of you and find ways to gradually blend it into your thought process. What will happen is that you will find happiness you didn't know existed and you will become the person you were meant to be."
