Approach

• Full Time: Network all of the time with everyone about everything
• Reciprocate: Networking is a two way street. Reciprocate whenever possible.
• Serve as human conduit: Rising tides lift all boats.

Networking is certainly one of the most overused words in the English language today. Networking is also, however, a necessary and worthwhile endeavor. It can be an effective tool to achieve a multitude of different ends and objectives. It is, however, often underutilized or even worse utilized in an indiscriminant and abusive manner.

The deceptive self serving manner in which it is practiced or exercised by some has caused it to be viewed by many as manipulative, crass, covert, and even fraudulent. For some it's all about using people, harboring a hidden agenda with a "What's in it for me?" attitude. When those people want something from someone else, they "network." Otherwise, they cannot be bothered. That is not only a counter productive, excessively opportunistic approach which is ultimately doomed to fail, but it is certainly not the method that we espouse.

The true "Art of Networking" and the guiding principles upon which the London Network is founded is instead about forging alliances, building and nurturing relationships based upon trust, mutual respect and consideration with those whom have the values and integrity to which you aspire. Our own networking endeavors must and should add value to those with whom we deal. All parties to any networking transaction must be beneficiaries. In a perfect world, your receptors allow you to anticipate something you can convey which may be of greater value to the recipient than it may be to you if simply withheld.

Some network for employment; business development; meeting a new mate; making new friends; expanding or connecting with their community or all of the above. Further, as one noted writer/commentator has pointed out "Some in fact Mix & Match, for Many Reasons." What's harder: Finding your dream job or dream mate?" If you know the answer to that question, than you are better than I.

It may seem at times that there are "cliquish" or impermeable parts of society. No doubt there are those who will take advantage of your generosity along the way. I myself have been the recipient of extraordinary acts of human kindness and generosity but also have been victimized by the predators swimming in the shark tank. It may take more effort to break through barriers or connect with the type of people who share common interests, values and goals. But the journey and those that you encounter along the way make it a worthwhile education and experience. Networking with integrity creates a greater willingness of all parties to be part of a human conduit to serve as energy and resource to one another. Sometimes you will give more than you receive and sometimes you will get back more than you give. It’s not about keeping score.
